Remembering Hillary. . .

And God saw all that He had made, and behold, it was very good.
Genesis 1:31a

Sometimes in life we are blessed in wonderful ways.
Sometimes we even recognize it when it happens.
Hillary was one of those times.

Just a small furry squirrel
Who captured a heart, and brought great joy to a man.

She arrived without fanfare; there was no way to know she was a gift.
Except, of course, that all of creation is a gift.
She was one of many who came to be fed,
But she quickly staked her claim.

She defended her human (and his stockpile of treats)
Against the interlopers. . .
Those who would only take and never give.

She chased away all rivals for his attention and affection,
Barking at them, her rapidly twitching tail a visible sign of her anger.
"He's mine!" she seemed to say.

And in return, she gave such gifts!
Proudly bringing her newborns for his admiration,
Deigning to sit on his shoulder or head or knee;
Taking treats from his hand,
Allowing a gentle touch on her face or back.

Such wonder and joy at this great gift!

There is an appointed time for everything.
And there is a time for every event under heaven.
Ecclesiastes 3:1

Hillary has gone from this place, but not from the thoughts and heart of her Dear Friend, and not from the memory of those who knew her only through the stories. She was a very special squirrel, one in a million. In the midst of sorrow, we are compelled to remember the joy.
