Editing of documents is often done casually
- if at all - in today's busy world. A poorly written or edited publication
often results in confusion or misunderstanding, and can indicate to the
reader that the document isn't important enough to deserve careful consideration.
Poor grammar and spelling are the two most frequent offenses, and even
today's spell-checkers aren't foolproof.

Any document worth producing deserves careful
editing.
If it's worth the time to write, it's worth the
time to edit! Incorrect spelling and grammar and poor syntax can
indicate an attitude of carelessness. Equally important, it can
cause misunderstandings, endless explanations, frustrated clients,
and in a worst-case scenario can result in actions contrary to those
that were intended.

Is "good enough" really good enough?
Organizational image is important. Most of us
want to do business with organizations who really do the job well
- who go the extra mile to ensure a project is complete or a service
is performed to satisfaction. If an organization can't take the
time to prepare good documents, how can the customer be sure that
the attitude of "good enough" isn't systemic?

"We can always make the corrections
next time."
Many documents do require updates and corrections,
but the original publication is still in circulation with all of
its mistakes. Once it's printed and in the hands of the public,
there's no way to get it back. I have a science reference in my
library that was published by a prominent organization and contains
an incorrectly used word on the first page. If the editor didn't
know the difference between "principal" and "principle,"
how much faith can I have that the rest of the information is error-free?
I'm sure the correction was made in subsequent editions, but mine
is still on my shelf - seldom used and often cross-checked with
other references.
